Envelope Help

I helped Isabella make an envelope sleeve for a smaller envelope where she put a rainbow loom bracelet. I figured this would be a great way to mail it safely in a fun way. She enjoyed the process. And I enjoyed watching her process.

Unimportant things

After picking the kids up from school they both wanted to go to the park. I’ll admit it, internally I groaned. It was cold, I hadn’t brought my jacket but those didn’t feel like great reasons to say no so I said yes, with the caveat that I would stay in the car. I played…

Sitting with my kids

In a recent post I addressed my desire to renew showing up for myself. You wouldn’t know it, since I’ve not posted much since then, however I’ve been busy doing just what I set out to do. And it’s manifested in many different ways – baking, cleaning (which doesn’t at first seem to be for…

Air Gun

Isabella went to Derek’s office Christmas party and came home with an air gun. Here’s a video I threw together of her and Quinn cracking each other up using it.

Modeling

‘Actions speak louder than words.’ An old cliché I know but it’s a pretty awesome thing to witness its effects. Last night during dinner Quinn looked at me, his eyes bright. “Ooh Mom! I know what I want to do tonight. After dinner lets go into the CPR and I have an idea for an…

Loveliness

It was a bright, crisp afternoon and I knew the kids would want to go to the park so I brought my camera along to amuse myself. I wanted to capture the vitality of them – climbing, running, laughing – the way they are perpetually in motion. And Lucy (the cat) although not at the…

Peppermint Bark

My motivation for Nano has halted. It occurred to me this morning that when the act of achieving a goal kills the desire for the activity itself, pushing through probably ain’t such a great idea. I’ve had wonderful moments with my kids and I haven’t written them down. My Dad almost died and I haven’t…

Apple Cider

Last night as I hugged Isabella goodnight I told her she could read a bit later since it wasn’t a school night and she could sleep in. “Then after I get up can we have a lazy day? We can practice everything we know – Kung Fu, Gymnastics, mathematics, history.” “How about piano?” “I can…

Splatter

Quinn and I were both cranky today and found ourselves cuddling together on the couch after school. “What would you like to do Quinn?” “I dunno. What do you wanna do?” “I want to draw.” I went to my studio space and went looking for a light sketch book and instead found one with sturdy…

Snapshot of my kids

Here’s a written snapshot of my kiddos from today. Isabella’s Question Isabella wasn’t responding as quickly as Derek would’ve like this morning while getting ready for school. Finally he yelled at her. A few minutes later I went to say goodbye to her, as I was heading to the gym, and she pulled me close…

How?

How did 4 days go by so quickly? Although I haven’t been posting, I have been creating in one form or another. I brought a small sketchbook with me when I picked Isabella up on Friday and did a blind contour drawing of she and her friends playing. Wow, I didn’t like it but starting…

Back to School

This morning the kids allowed me to take first day of school photos of them. I’m not exactly sure why this is a tradition in so many families but I like having the record – their height against the doorway and how it changes year-to-year. These are the first back to school photos in this…

Bread and Knobs

The other day I assisted Quinton as he made his first homemade bread. While we waited for it to rise, I pulled out a few doorknobs that I’d found on the side of the road awhile back and began painting them. Bread, painting, bread, painting. I pulled out a stick to paint the white dots…

Cat

The kids began the day with their aunt Heather and had to come home a few short hours later because of a fight that ended with Quinn getting twin fingernail gouges on his neck. They’ve been getting on each others last nerve so I wasn’t surprised to get the call to come get them. I…

Request from Quinn

Last night before going to bed Quinn cut little strips of paper and gave one to me, Aunt Heather, Isabella, and Derek. “I cut these so you could each draw on it or something. And that will be your bookmark. If you want.” When Heather was gathering her things to go home he made sure…

Date with Isabella

Last night as the kids were getting ready for bed Isabella cocked her head and looked up at me. “Are you gonna be around tomorrow?” “Yeah, I’m not going anywhere.” “Then we should have a date.” “You want to have a mother-daughter date?” Her face lit up as she gave me a full-toothed grin. “What…

Buttons

Time with the cousins is fabulous for my kids. They’ve essentially had a week-long sleep over and they, for the most part, are over the moon. However lack of sleep and eating well has begun to take its toll. I’ve had some chats with Isabella about behavior and how the only person she has control…

Fresh Liberty

At work today I got an IM from Derek who was working from home since the kid’s summer vacation began today. “You there?” “Yes.” “Quinn wants to walk to your work by himself.” (I’m lucky enough to live a short (and straight) walk from work.) I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think of…

Interesting

Part of growing up is having to pack your own lunches and this year the kids have done a good (if occasionally griping) job of it. And this is Isabella’s lunch. Which from above looks quite normal… However, upon closer examination, she has created an interesting take on the good ole PB&J standard by making…

Beach Walk

Isabella’s class needed a driver/chaperone for a low-tide walk at Golden Gardens so I volunteered. A bunch of kids in rain boots, yelling up and down the beach sharing their finds, crabs, clams, starfish, moon snails, hermit crab shells. And the fact that I went was Isabella’s high for the day.

S’mores

I had the kids to myself tonight. After dinner we headed to the backyard and tried out the chiminea I was given for Mother’s Day. The s’mores were tasty, of course, but sweeter was the excitement the kids experienced. Quinn made his wish known, “Let’s do this every night!”

Walk with Quinn

I’ve taken a week break from my blog and it’s both felt good and very strange. I’m happy to be getting back. Since I last posted I’ve been to Mexico with my family of origin, seen a humpback whale and her baby, been sunburned, buzzed, and relaxed. Now I’m home on a rare warm Seattle…

Glimpse

Here’s a little insight into my process. I go about my day as normal and occasionally get a glimpse of what my creative adventure might involve that night. It’s like a day-long, semi-conscious, no-clues scavenger hunt. A quote that catches my eye gets filed away, an image sticks in my head as something I’d like…

Being a parent is sometimes the most ridiculous thing. Late nights, disrupted sleep, early mornings, pack mule, magic maker, miracle worker, mender of hurts, creator of boundaries, giver and taker-away-er, chef, cleaner, concierge, boss, dictator, negotiator, moral compass, cruise director – these are only a few of the job requirements. Today I touched on several…
